Meeting safely on the Costa del Sol
Updated 2026-10-08
Public first meetings, your own way home, and how to use aliases and reports without turning a date into an interrogation.
A first meeting is a public errand
The Costa del Sol and Gibraltar are easy places to romanticise and ordinary places to get stranded. A first meeting should look like something you could tell a friend without lowering your voice: a walk on a promenade, a coffee in an old town, a clearly named corner, an end time. It should not look like a private address, a boat, a hotel room, or a car driven by someone you have never seen.
CostaDelLove is for adults, 18 and over, and it is built so you can talk before you reveal your everyday identity. An alias is not a disguise for bad behaviour. It is a way to keep your email, your workplace, and your front door off the first conversation. Use it that way. Share more only when you have decided to, after a meeting that felt calm.
Habits that travel from Gibraltar to Málaga
Tell someone you trust the town, the pin, and the time you will message them afterwards. Keep your phone charged and your own way home: the coastal train, a bus you already understand, or your own car. Do not accept a lift from a first meeting, even when the urbanisation is awkward to leave. Awkward is better than dependent.
Stay with your drink. Do not hand your phone to a match “to see a photo” or “to put in their number” unless you are happy for them to see what is on the screen. Do not send copies of your ID, your address, your gate code, or a set of explicit photos to buy trust. Trust is the meeting going well, not a file you transfer.
Money is the simplest red flag. Requests to invest, to pay a fee, to receive a parcel, to help with a ticket, or to move the chat to another app before you have met are reasons to stop. Report them in the product and block. You do not owe a polite debate to a stranger who changed the subject to your bank.
What changes by town
In Gibraltar and La Línea the extra variable is the frontier. Agree which side you are meeting on, carry the ID you would normally use if a crossing is even possible, and do not send a photo of that ID. Build slack into the time. A date that only works if the queue is short is a date that will start as an argument.
In Sotogrande and parts of Estepona and Marbella the layout is residential and the evening streets can be quiet. Public matters more there, not less. Use a marina, an old town, or a promenade while other people are around. In Fuengirola, Benalmádena, and Torremolinos the train makes a clean exit; name the station. In Málaga, use the busy centre and do not let “it is too crowded” become the reason a stranger’s flat is the plan.
Heat, summer traffic, and parking are logistics, not romance. Meet somewhere you can both reach without a speech. If you are only in town for a season of work, say so. A safe community includes not wasting someone’s month on a story you already know will end.
If it feels wrong
Leave. You do not need a dramatic reason, a finished drink, or a closing speech. A public place is useful because standing up is ordinary. Message the friend who has the plan. If you are on the app, block, and report when there was pressure, harassment, or a scam pattern so the next person is not starting from zero.
Nothing here is a promise that every meeting will be kind. It is a way of arranging the meeting so kindness is easier and an exit is possible. Read the town page for where you actually are, and read the privacy policy before you upload a photo you would not want a stranger to keep.
Singles, couples, and consent
The same habits apply if you are one person or two. A couple should say so before the meeting, and both partners should be in the conversation if both of them are going. Consent is specific: a yes to a drink is not a yes to anything else, and either person can change their mind without a debate. Do not send explicit photos to prove you are serious. Do not ask for them as the price of a hello.
An open-minded evening can still be a public one. A bar, a promenade, or a town event you can leave is enough for a first hour. A private address, a hotel room, or a party you cannot name a way out of is a later decision, after you have met and everyone still wants to be there. The couples guide goes further on discretion. This one is the floor.
Common questions
Should we exchange phone numbers first?
You do not have to. Messaging inside CostaDelLove keeps your everyday number private until you choose otherwise. A person who insists on moving off the app before a public meeting is asking for something you can refuse.
Is a busy nightlife street safer?
Busy helps you leave and hurts the conversation. Early evening on a promenade or in an old town is usually the better mix. Save loud nights for when you already know you like each other.
What if I am new on the coast?
Say so. Meet in the most obvious public place in that town, in daylight, with your own way back to where you are staying. Do not treat being new as a reason to accept a private address.
